the Little Light in our kitchen

by In All Our Years

there is a Little Light in our kitchen,
and She does not light during the day,
when most are away, but only at night,
when we all do lay.

as evening approaches,
he arrives to find,
the Little Light’s switch,
to be tickled and clicked.

the Little Light says hello.

She quietly beams Her soft tender glow,
casting shadows on the countertops,
the stove and floors below.

She sometimes ask the cat to visit,
in the dark of the night,
to hop high onto the counter,
and come nuzzle Her tender light,
but we don’t know for sure,
what causes Her much delight.

She shines through the night,
and watches over Her home,
sleeping souls in their beds,
dreaming of, where they roam-

and when the bright one comes around,
and starts to light the surrounding town,
the souls in their rooms will stir and wake.

and he will rise and come to see the Little Light,
and wander toward and find the Little Light’s switch,
to be tickled and clicked.

the Little Light says good night.

and as the day is new,
coffee will brew and all will arrive
or maybe a few and then off
to their day, for much to do.

and during the day,
the Little Light will wait,
while the cat finds a window
and watches birds in the yard,
contemplating their fate.

until the day is done,
and all return home,
when he comes to find
the Little Light’s switch,
to be tickled and clicked.

the Little Light says hello.

and soon the cat on the floor,
wanting all to leave,
eyes pondering happy and aglow,
will hop and nuzzle near the Little Light,
as now we are sure and do know,
the cat loves the Little Light
in the kitchen,
as do I, good night.
